Dinner with my cameraman Iain Clark at Carluccio’s, London St Pancras. I arrived at the crowded restaurant to find Iain, who likes privacy, was seated in the corner of corners, literally at the very end of the venue. I’m a bit claustrophobic and wanted to move. But the restaurant was fully packed and there was a long queue of customers at the entrance. Honestly, why can’t they go elsewhere?
Thankfully, the manager Tim managed to find us the perfect spot outside, under the heaters. Well, I exaggerated my claustrophobia and lied that I might pass out! It worked and Tim was ever so helpful, making sure the food arrived on time.
Try their Menu Fisso, 2 courses for £9.95. The food tasted fresh, arrived fairly fast and the service was great. For starters Iain had Bruschetta; tomatoes with oregano, basil leaves, roasted peppers and extra virgin olive oil on garlick Italian bread. I enjoyed Pâté Di Fegatini Di Pollo; chicken liver pâté, toasted Tuscan bread and cornichons. For mains we both had Milanese Di Pollo; flattened chicken breast, bread-crumbed and fried, with green salad.
Our charming Sicilian waiter Gabriele poured us glorious Mandrarossa Nero d’Avola, the perfect wine to compliment our food. We also shared Panacotta and Tiramisu for dessert.
After dinner, we stopped over for a drink at The Gilbert Scott for drinks. Great bar! Amazing atmosphere and reasonably priced drinks. After all that eating and drinking, I can’t believe I let Iain talk me into cycling all the way back to Pimlico where he lives. So I guess we burned all those calories!
Head over to Carluccio’s St Pancras for dinner with a friend or on a date. Value for money, good food and great service. Stop over at The Gilbert Scott for an after dinner drink but do NOT cycle home when you’re tipsy or worse, totally drunk!
